Jim Hodges at Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York
Jim Hodges (US, 1957) created a compelling installation at Barbara Gladstone‘s 21st Street location in New York, grouping four large scale boulders around a central void. Hodges replaced part of the original surface of the rock with vibrantly colored stainless steel cast-offs. Part of a new body of work that extends to Gladstone Gallery’s 24th Street location, the installation is a magically poetic reference to many religious traditions, from Japanese Kami beliefs or Stonehenge worship sites to Judeo-Christian as well as Muslim practices in which rocks were embellished to embody a myriad of spiritual notions. Jim Hodges’ We Are Poems, at Barbara Gladstone Gallery, 530 W 21st Street, NY, through Friday, December 23, 2011.
