Dinner for 24 Dogs by Nicolas Party at Salon 94, New York
Much like a dog chasing its own tail, Swiss artist Nicolas Party (CH, 1980) turned his opening party into the artwork he was having the opening for. Referencing Judy Chicago (US, 1939), Rirkrit Tiravanija (ฤกษ์ฤทธิ์ ตีระวนิช, AR, 1961) or even fellow-countryman Daniel Spoerri (CH, 1930), Party’s party was a colorful and staged dinner experience around an oversized table, some very commanding dinner plates, a spare offering of food which needed to be shared, and 24 endearing cube-dog stools. All objects are hand made and decorated in abstract patterns with a plethora of historical references. The installation, now that it has gone through 2 dinner events, will be on display at Salon 94‘s Freedman Alley space from Friday, November 11 through Sunday, December 11, 2012. Nicolas Party (Lausanne, 1980) lives and works in Glasgow. Earlier solo exhibitions include Still Lives & Big Naked Woman at Gregor Staiger Zurich in 2012, and Still Lives, Stones & Elephants at the Swiss Institute New York, also in 2012.
