Today architect Lella Vignelli passed away here in New York. Lella was together with her husband Massimo the guiding force and example in the life of many young designers and architects in New York in the second half of last century. She was both visionary and exacting in her work and life. Vignelli Associates, the architectural and design firm she and her husband ran for 50 years has been the benchmark for innovation and style in the United States.
Lella taught me everything I now hold dear in design and architecture. She also taught me my place in the picking order of the office, with her sharp observation “Booby … there is only place for one Prima Donna in this office, and it’s not you” How could I have ever thought I could compete.
